Bill Emmott on the Rebalance of Power among China, India & Japan

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Click here to listen to a recording of Bill Emmott’s talk (listed under the 10/14/08 program, “The Rebalance of Power among China, India & Japan”).

The rising economic and political power of Asia is the biggest story of our times. But it is often misunderstood, either as a story of West versus East or simply the rise of China and its challenge to America. Bill Emmott’s new book, Rivals: How the Power Struggle Between China, India and Japan will Shape our Next Decade, challenges those views. Join Mr. Emmott as he discusses the rivalry within these three great Asian powers and the economic and social changes that China, India and Japan are all destined to experience during the next decade.

Bill Emmott was the editor of The Economist —the world’s leading weekly magazine on current affairs and business—for 13 years, stepping down in 2006 to become an independent writer, speaker and consultant. He has written six books on Japan including the bestselling The Sun Also Sets: The Limits to Japan’s Economic Power. He has won numerous prestigious journalism awards including the Italian “È giornalismo” award, the business journalist of the year award from the London Press Club, and a lifetime achievement award from the Work Foundation. He has honorary degrees from Warwick and City Universities, and is an honorary fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford.

Moderator David W. Lyon is the Founding President Emeritus of the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) and Chairman of the Board of the Japan Society of Northern California. Prior to launching PPIC, Lyon worked at the RAND Corporation for 23 years, serving as a Vice President and corporate officer. He founded the RAND Center for U.S.-Japan Relations and served as its Co-Director from 1989 to 1993. Lyon holds a B.S. from Michigan State University and a Masters and Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a trustee of the World Affairs Council of Northern California.
