What Does a DPJ Victory Mean for the Japanese Economy?

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Join Dr. Robert Feldman of Morgan Stanley, one of the world’s foremost experts on the Japanese economy, for a penetrating discussion of the nation’s economic future under the new administration of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and the Japan Democratic Party.

During the global financial crisis, Japan’s GDP dropped more than other nations, even though the financial shocks came from abroad. Now, the new government is struggling to find policies to revive the flagging economy, but is still burdened by heavy debts and continued political constraints. What is the outlook for policy and for the economy under the DPJ? And what contributions will Japan make to the global agenda?

Dr. Feldman, Director of Economic Research Department and Managing Director at Morgan Stanley Securities Japan Co. Ltd., will lead us through these key issues at the autumn session of the Japan Financial Forum luncheon series, held in cooperation with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

As part of Morgan Stanley’s global economics team, Dr. Feldman is responsible for forecasting the Japanese economy, financial markets and policy developments. He is member of several economic study committees of ministries of the Japanese government, and is a commissioner of the Japan-US Friendship Commission. He is also a regular commentator on World Business Satellite, the nightly business program of TV Tokyo, and author of five books on Japan, its economy and its future, in both English and Japanese.
