Scent of the Shining Prince: Incense and The Tale of Genji
Friday, November 14, 2008
This event is sold out!
Our millennial celebration of Murasaki Shikibu’s literary classic, The Tale of Genji, continues with a lecture and demonstration on Japanese incense as depicted in the historical novel. In cooperation with the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco and the Genji Millennium Committee, we are pleased to host a lecture with Mr. Nishiura Kihachiro, a Kôdô Master from Japan. Mr. Kihachiro will provide a glimpse into elegant Heian aristocratic culture with his talk on Nishiura Style incense. The program includes an exhibition of hiragana calligraphy, a scented kimono, and a Genji Emaki slide show presentation.
Mr. Nishiura Kihachiro was born in Tokyo and has a Master’s degree in Geophysics from Ohio University. He has been studying tea ceremony, flower arrangement, incense, and calligraphy since his childhood. With many years of discipline and his deep love for Japanese traditional arts, he founded Nishiura Style in 2002. Nishiura Style is a blend of modern and traditional art form, which allows people to express their own uniqueness freely.
