Join us for a free brown bag lunch meeting on Japan Society earthquake and tsunami relief efforts, and how the disaster may shape Japan's future at home, regionally, and globally. Dr. Barnett F. Baron, President & CEO of Give2Asia, will discuss his organization's work in the crisis, as well as the Japanese NPOs on the ground that Japan Society and Give2Asia are funding during this catastrophe. Dr. T.J. Pempel, Professor of Political Science at UC Berkeley, will provide a broader view of the long-term impacts. Internationally recognized disaster recovery expert Mary C. Comerio, Professor of Architecture at UC Berkeley, will discuss the challenges to Japan’s reconstruction.

Dr. Barnett F. Baron, President & CEO of Give2Asia, is an innovator in the field of Asian philanthropy and is a principal architect in the creation of Give2Asia, established in 2001. Mr. Baron joined The Asia Foundation in 1993 and served as Executive Vice President from 1994 to 2011. At the Foundation, he has played a critical role in strategic planning and operations. He helped establish the Foundation’s offices in Vietnam and China, and has supervised or contributed to programs in China, Hong Kong, Japan, and both South and North Korea. Previously, Mr. Baron was Vice President for International Programs at Save the Children, and Senior Representative for East and South Asia for the Population Council based in Bangkok.

Mary C. Comerio, M.Arch., M.S.W, Professor at UC Berkeley, joined the faculty of the Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley in 1978 and served as chair from 2006-09. As an architect, she has designed numerous public and private facilities including market-rate and affordable housing. In the last two decades, her research has focused on the costs and benefits of seismic rehabilitation for existing buildings (particularly housing), post-disaster recovery and reconstruction, and loss modeling. Professor Comerio was the principal investigator on the pilot study for the Disaster Resistant University Initiative funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and UC Berkeley in 1998.

Dr. T. J. Pempel, Professor at UC Berkeley, joined Berkeley's Political Science Department in July 2001 and served as director of the Instituteof East Asian Studies from 2002 until 2006. There he held the Il Han New Chair in Asian Studies. Just prior to coming to Berkeley, he was at the University of Washington at Seattle where he was the Boeing Professor of International Studies in the Jackson School of International Studies and an adjunct professor in Political Science. From 1972 to 1991, he was on the faculty at Cornell University; he was also Director of Cornell's East Asia Program. Professor Pempel is Chair of the Working Group on Northeast Asian Security of CSCAP.
