Join us for an advance look at a revolutionary new Japanese typeface designed by Adobe’s Type Engineering Team in Japan. The team has developed an innovative typeface that is visually rich and free of the design protocols that have constrained Japanese fonts for decades. Called Kazuraki, the new design could become an inspiration and model for other Japanese type designers and foundries, enabling them to create more stylized and expressive fonts of their own. The Kazuraki design is inspired by the calligraphy of 12th century artist and writer Fujiwara-no-Teika, who is considered one of the greatest poets in Japan’s history. Adobe expects to make the Kazuraki font broadly available as early as this fall.

Dr. Ken Lunde, Senior Computer Scientist at Adobe Systems, will outline the process of creating this unique typeface, the distinctive design aspects of Kazuraki, as well as details about its OpenType implementation.

Dr. Ken Lunde has been working for Adobe Systems Incorporated for over eighteen years, and is currently a Senior Computer Scientist in CJKV (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese) Type Development. Dr. Lunde is a leading authority on East Asian text-handing, and reads, writes, and speaks Japanese. His book, CJKV Information Processing, is the computer industry’s standard reference work on the topic. The updated second edition was published at the end of 2008.
