The San Francisco International Women’s Film Festival (SFWFF) is hosting its fifth annual film festival celebrating women in all areas of film. The Japan Society is happy to co-present the opening night champagne reception and screening of _Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority_, a profile of the outspoken Japanese American politician who became the first woman of color to serve in Congress.
Patsy Takemoto Mink made headline news in 1965 when she became the first woman of color to serve in the U.S. Congress. An outspoken liberal, Mink stood out for her opposition to the Vietnam War and her fierce advocacy for equality and justice in America. Award-winning filmmaker Kimberlee Bassford chronicles the fascinating life of this pioneering politician who co-authored Title IX, the 1972 landmark decision prohibiting sex discrimination in schools, whether in education or athletics. _Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority_ is the story of this dynamic trailblazer who, battling racism and sexism, redefined American politics.
