Family Matinee with Jake Shimabukuro

Sunday, November 9, 2008

In association with SFJAZZ, we are pleased to present an afternoon with Hawaiian-born ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro. Playing jazz, classical, rock and everything in between, Shimabukuro aims to show that the ukulele is capable of much more than traditional Hawaiian music. Also a talented composer, Shimabukuro scored the soundtrack for the 2006 Japanese independent film, Hula Girls.

Created with families in mind, this concert showcases Shimabukuro in a reduced-price, hour-long, afternoon concert that combines world-class artistry with interactive discussion and audience participation. Shimabukuro will answer questions from audience members of all ages about jazz, music composition and performance, and about his life as an artist.

Jake Shimabukuro had his first ukulele lesson at age four: “When I played my first chord I was hooked.” From his modest beginnings at a local Honolulu cafe, Shimabukuro has gone on to play across the U.S. as well as internationally. His 2006 CD, Gently Weeps, has sold 100,000 copies worldwide. Shimabukuro brought the NBC house down with his performance of the title track on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, prompting O’Brien to declare it one of the best things he’s ever seen on the show.
