Theatre of Yugen
Monday, November 5, 2007
In co-sponsorship with The Commonwealth Club’s Asia-Pacific Affairs Forum, we invite you to experience for yourself the essence of 7th century Japanese theatrics with a live performance demonstration by “THEATRE OF YUGEN” on Monday, November 5th, 2007.
Founded in 1978, Theatre of Yugen is unique in its commitment to working with both Kyogen and Noh theatre forms. Theater of Yugen has performed across North America and Japan, for their first-ever visit to the Club, they will demonstrate the aesthetic concept of Yugen. As a dramatic form of theater that is older than Kabuki itself, the drama of Noh depicts sublime suffering as sung behind masks with stunning costumes. Noh is counterbalanced with the comedy of Kyogen, combining western sensibilities and eastern aesthetics.
Theater of Yugen represented the United States at the 2005 World’s Fair Expo in Japan and received a 25th anniversary commendation from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
