*The registration deadline for this event has passed.* Join us for Part II of our 2009 Zadankai series, where we present unique, intimate discussions with various members of our Board of Directors. Participation in each discussion will be limited to approximately 15 people to ensure a truly roundtable conversation. Lunch will be provided, courtesy of each hosting Board member. Read on for a description of Part II of this exciting luncheon series.

As manga, anime, games, and other Japanese content continue to reach a broader audience in the US and abroad, Japanese authors, publishers, studios and other content owners are being forced to make decisions that could determine the future of their business internationally, and the degree to which J-Pop culture continues to expand overseas beyond its core fan base. The principal challenges are developing international channels for distribution of this content that are profitable, while limiting illegal distribution. While J-Pop content owners face many of the same issues as others rights holders today, the facts that Japanese publishers and studios have historically served only an isolated domestic market and are often relatively small, without the resources to build international corporate networks, have created special challenges.

David Hoppe of Access International Law Group will discuss how Japanese rights holders might be able to take advantage of the increasing demand for their content internationally while navigating the challenges posed by copying, fan sites and fan-subs, and competing business models for generating revenue from content on the web.

*David Hoppe* is a corporate transactional lawyer with significant experience representing Japanese rights-holders and the founder of "Access International Law Group":http://www.ailawgroup.com/, a law firm based in San Francisco and Silicon Valley with a Tokyo office. Mr. Hoppe has over sixteen years of experience negotiating and closing a broad range of international transactions, focusing primarily on media and technology licensing, international mergers/acquisitions and joint ventures, corporate finance, intellectual property, corporate governance, and general corporate matters, as well as early-stage company work. A significant part of David’s practice is assisting Japanese companies with US business, particularly in the technology and media areas.
