Green Investing: What to Consider?
Tuesday, June 17, 2008
At the Japan Society of Northern California our Board of Directors is one of our greatest strengths. Drawn from all corners of the business world, they are all experts in their respective fields. It is with great pleasure that we offer you a chance to tap into that unique fund of knowledge and expertise in our inaugural Japan Society Zadankai (roundtable) series.
Over the next five months, the Zadankai series will bring you five intimate discussions, on five topics, with five members of our Board. Participation in each discussion will be limited to approximately 15 people to ensure a truly roundtable conversation. Read on for descriptions of this exciting luncheon series.
PART ONE
Terry Marsh, Principal, Quantal International
Green Investing: What to Consider?
“Green Investing” introduces attributes of investments beyond monetary returns and risk. As a result, it also introduces a host of issues that need to be considered in setting up a portfolio containing green investments. In this discussion, Terry Marsh will consider some of these: Simplistic inclusion of “good” investments/stocks in a portfolio and exclusion of “bad” stocks that can result in unintended “bets” for or against the market, e.g. Eco funds in Japan in the 90s; and strategies for identifying winners/losers in green investing.
Terry Marsh co-founded Quantal International to provide sophisticated modeling of global portfolio characteristics to investment firms and other financial organizations. Mr. Marsh was born in Australia, received his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and was a visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Tokyo in 1993. He is now Professor Emeritus of Finance at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. He has consulted for the New York Stock Exchange and Japanese financial institutions.
