Evening of Rakugo and Kamikiri

Friday, July 8, 2011

With cooperation from the Japan Society of Northern California, Middlebury College Japanese School at Mills is pleased to present a special evening of rakugo and kamikiri. Three highly accomplished professional rakugo and kamikiri performers—Yanagiya Sankyo, Hayashiya Niraku, and Ryutei Saryu—are visiting Mills College from Japan this summer to introduce these traditional Japanese performing arts to the Japanese School at Mills, as well as the general public.

This is a great opportunity to experience a taste of traditional Japanese storytelling and paper-cutting performance. In addition, students in the rakubo club will perform short stories called kobanashi. All professional rakugo performances will have English subtitles projected on a screen so that non-Japanese-speaking people may enjoy the show.
