Enthusiastic audiences for Japanese cinema at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) have been a constant during the institution’s forty-year history. Cheers and applause have often been heard at the PFA Theater for cast members such as Kinuyo Tanaka, Setsuko Hara, Hideko Takamine, and Machiko Kyo. During the golden age of Japanese cinema, lead actresses became icons, rising to stardom on the international stage and captivating viewers with their powerful range of emotional expression. BAM/PFA’s Japanese Divas series presents twenty-two films directed by such cinematic masters as Kenji Mizoguchi, Kon Ichikawa, Yasujiro Ozu, Akira Kurosawa, Keisuke Kinoshita, Mikio Naruse, Hiroshi Teshigahara, and Yasuzo Masumura.
