Takeshi Shikama

November 2, 2010 through January 8, 2011

In conjunction with the exhibition of two photographic series by Takeshi Shikama, Silent Respiration of Forests and Evanescence–Lotus, the Japan Society and the Corden|Potts Gallery welcomed Takeshi Shikama and his wife, Yukiko, from Tokyo for an artist’s reception on December 4. Silent Respiration of Forests and Evanescence–Lotus will be on view at the Corden|Potts Gallery from November 2, 2010 through January 8, 2011.

Takeshi Shikama attributes his special connection to forests to the fact that he is a Japanese national living in Japan where seventy percent of the land is made up of mountains and forests. "Owing to Mother Nature's rich blessings, we Japanese have continuously partaken in the long history and tradition of doing our best to preserve nature and even worshipping nature," he said. However, he explained that that connection between nature and humans has been broken in contemporary Japan, "especially in cities which have developed at a most rapid pace." He added that he never had an affinity for forests during the almost forty years he lived in Tokyo. But then he spent ten years building a lodge in a forest and his sensitivity towards nature fully awakened.

In addition to being exhibited frequently in Tokyo and other cities in Japan, Shikama's work has been seen in solo and group exhibits in galleries and museums around the world.
