Japanese Language and Cultural Experience: Tea Ceremony Workshop

Friday, September 17, 2010

The Japanese Tea Ceremony “The Way of Tea” is said to contain every aspect of Japanese custom, art and culture. The Japan Society is proud to host a hands-on workshop on how to make a perfect bowl of tea. Please come join us to experience and gain an understanding of 茶の湯, Chanoyu (The Way of Tea) and enjoy tea ceremony practice in a friendly atmosphere.

Mr. Katsuhiro Otsuka, Japanese language instructor, will demonstrate the Urasenke-style temae (procedure of making tea). Ms. Erika I will narrate and explain brief history, cultural contents, and basic principles of the tea ceremony in English. After the demonstration, participants will learn the language used and seen during the ceremony (greeting, vocabulary and other tea specific terminology, etc). Then they will learn the manners and the basic principles of temae. Everyone will have a chance to make tea in an antique tea ceremony bowl and enjoy it with tasty 和菓子, wagashi (Traditional Japanese Sweets) from 源吉兆庵 Minamoto Kitchoan. 茶筅, Chasen (Tea whisk) will be given to participants as a GIFT!

Please note: This event has limited space and registration is first come first served. Please register early to ensure your spot in the workshop. Neither previous experience in the tea ceremony nor the knowledge of Japanese is necessary.
